CELEBRITY Apologies

When it comes to the stars, it's easy to put them on a pedestal. Many people have favorite celebs whom they struggle to believe could do anything wrong. In reality, of course, famous people make mistakes just like everyone else. And just like everyone else, when those mistakes hurt other people, they have to apologize.

Timbaland recently came under fire for commenting that his friend and collaborator, Justin Timberlake, should "put a muzzle on" Britney Spears amid the release of her tell-all memoir. The quote sounds like a resurfaced Tweet from 2010, but no, he said it in 2023. The music producer was taking part in a Q&A at the Kennedy Center of Performing Art on October 29 when the topic of Spears' memoir, 'The Woman in Me,' came up. Timbaland produced Timberlake's 2002 song 'Cry Me a River,' which has long been rumored to be about his breakup with Spears, contributing to rumors that she cheated on him. Spears denies this in her book, stating that it was in fact Timberlake who had been cheating. She admitted to kissing dancer Wade Robson one night, writing that she told Timberlake about it and they moved on.

When Timbaland was asked about the song and Spears' new memoir, he responded, "She going crazy. I wanted to call and say, ‘JT, you gotta put a muzzle on that girl." He went on to comment that everyone wants to go viral these days just to make money, suggesting that Spears was trying to cause a stir for financial gain. In the end, it was Timbaland who went viral for his misogynistic comments. "Men want to silence and isolate anyone that divulges the truth about them or their boy-buddies, especially those with a perceived disability," wrote one X user. Another added, "Imagine in 2023 saying a woman should have a muzzle put on her for speaking her truth," summing up the public's response to his words.

Timbaland later offered an apology on TikTok, saying, "I'm sorry to all the Britney fans, even to her." He continued, "I'm sorry, because muzzle was—no, you have a voice. You speak what you want to speak. Who am I to tell you what not to speak? And I was wrong for saying that." Many fans were quick to point out that Timbaland may still be salty towards Spears for passing him over in favor of another producer back in 2006. At the time, he criticized her to the media and accused her of having a big head for choosing not to collaborate with him. "She should, humbly humble herself," Timbaland told MTV News. "And make a phone call and say I'm sorry." But in the end, he's the one who had to apologize.
