Part of the wider Catholic Inquisition, the systematic persecution of Jews and Muslims began in the late 1400s and continued for three centuries. The name Inquisition is derived from the Latin verb inquiro ("inquire into"), but this was a judicial procedure that went far beyond just asking questions.
